Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaeangliae)

Easily spotted by its blow, arching of its back showing a small dorsal fin located on the whale's raised hump (the moniker humpback), and last, the never disappointing sight of its tail. Like fingerprints, the whale's tail, or more accurately, the fluke is not only an exciting sight to witness, but is used to identify an individual subject. Tail slapping and especially breaching are two other behaviors that add to the unique personality of these magnificent marine mammals.
